Balustrading : Building Regulations and Requirements The British Standard BS 6399 requires the design and loadings for balustrades to be in line with Building Regulations. Approved Document K in relation to guarding states that if a deck or other structure, such balcony or retaining wall, is over 600mm from the ground and therefore presents a danger of falling then a guard rail ( balustrade ) is required and has to be 1.1m above the level of the deck or structure. There can be no gaps of more than 100mm anywhere in the balustrade and the design should be such that a child cannot climb.

Options: The rail can be made from any material that meets the required loadings set out in the British Standard. This could be timber, steel, stainless steel or aluminium. Toughened glass infills are ideal for maintaining the view and make a perfect windbreak. We can fit toughened glass into timber, stainless steel or powder coated balustrading.

Other infills: Options for infills are numerous.  Our basic infill is timber spindles but we have used yacht wire, trellis, rope and even clear perspex tubes where design requirements allow.
